College Visits

 

Questions To Ask & Information To Gain

Academic

  1. What academic support systems are in place to assist freshmen during their transition from high school to college life?  Freshman orientation?  Freshman seminars?  When are they held?
  2. Are freshmen assigned to an academic counselor or advisor?  Does that advisor stay with the student for four years?  Is the advisor assigned (or later changed) based on the student’s choice of a major?
  3. How do students register for classes? 
  4. What is the standard size for introductory classes?  For more advanced classes in your major?
  5. Who teaches freshmen students in lecture classes and laboratory courses?  Professors?  Graduate students or teaching assistants?
  6. Who assists students with the selection of a major?  When must a student declare a major?  How difficult is it to change a major? 
  7. What are the most popular majors?  Is it possible to have a double major?
  8. How many students return from the freshman year to the sophomore year?
  9. What percentage of students graduate in four years?  Is it possible to have a double major and still graduate in four years?
  10. Is the college a student-friendly environment?  Ask about the relationship between students, faculty and administrators.  How accessible are faculty members for assistance outside of class?
  11. Ask about the technology systems and services on campus.  Are computer centers available?  Is a campus-wide technology network available to support communication among students, faculty and staff?  Are all classrooms and/or all dorms wired for technology?
  12. If you have learning differences and are accustomed to having academic accommodations or modifications in high school, find out how special services are accessed at the college. 
  13. What options are available for study abroad? 
  14. Does the college provide support for students in their efforts to find internships related to their majors?
  15. Does the college provide assistance or support to students in applying to professional or graduate schools?
  16. Are career counselors available to students?  Does the college assist students in finding employment in anticipation of graduation?  Do students have the opportunity to access community mentors?
  17. Are undergraduate students allowed to work with faculty in undergraduate research?

Student Life

  1. Look at the profile of students.  Are they primarily from one state?  Are they geographically diverse?  Ethnically diverse?  Religiously diverse?  Gender balanced? 
  2. What percentage of students reside on campus?  Are freshmen guaranteed housing?
  3. What residence hall options are available?  Traditional two-person rooms?  Single rooms?  Suites?  Apartments?  Honors dorms?  Special-interest dorms or floors?  Foreign language houses?
  4. Are freshmen required to live on campus?  Is there a residency requirement beyond the freshman year?
  5. What amenities are available in residence halls?  Connections to the Internet and campus intranet system?  Cable TV?  Microwaves?  Refrigerators?  Washing machines and dryers?  Study lounges? Dining halls? 
  6. Are the dorms single sex or coed?  Are there visitation hours?  Quiet hours?
  7. What dining facilities are available on campus?  Are there meal plans?  Is there a campus store?
  8. Can freshmen have cars on campus?  What parking facilities are available?
  9. What campus organizations are open to freshmen?  How do students find out about them?
  10. Do you have to be a performance major to participate in campus productions?  If not, are there performance groups available for students to participate in musical, dance and theater productions? 
  11. Are there fraternities and sororities on campus?  Are they nationally affiliated or local?  What percentage of students is in sororities and fraternities?  Are there sorority and fraternity houses?  When do students pledge?  Do both freshmen and upperclassmen go through rush?
  12. What varsity athletics occur on campus?  What recreational or intramural sports are available?  Is there a recreation center on campus that is open to all students?  Do students pay a fee to use the recreation center? 
  13. Are there organizations or activities supported through campus ministry programs?
  14. Are there opportunities to do community service?  What organizations support community service on campus?
  15. Look at the community surrounding the college.  Are there adequate living facilities if dorm space is not available after the freshman year?  Are there movie theaters?  Shopping malls?  Performance halls?  Parks?
  16. How do you get to campus from your home?  Drive?  Fly?  What options are available for transportation to and from the college?
