I umpire softball in my spare time. It's a nice departure from the stress and strain of academic pursuits. I have had the privilege of umpiring in numerous state and regional tournaments as well as four national tournaments. |

Waverly, Iowa |
| This is my hometown. It's a small town in N.E. Iowa. It is the home of numerous small industries and Wartburg College. In high school, I was in a number of plays and speech contests. I also ran on the track team and held the school record in the 2 mile run until my younger brother broke it a few years later. |

Des Moines, Iowa |
I lived in Des Moines for about 17 years. Being the state capital, politics is a big thing there. Des Moines is also the second largest center for insurance companies in the U.S. behind Hartford, Connecticut. I taught at Roosevelt HS, which as part of its heritage, was part of the Tinker v. School Board of Des Moines decision that gave students a number of their rights they have today.
